Think you might get snowed in??

According to everyone, the current cold weather here in Ireland is the worst we've experienced since 1982. For most countries who are used to 'real' bad weather, it must be laughable at how poorly we are set up to cope with a few inches of snow and a couple of weeks of sub-zero temperatures. On the other hand, as we really only get this type of weather every 25 years or so, it would seem extreme to over-invest in things like gritting equipment and supplies on the off-chance that this winter would be the bad one! However, at times when money is extremely tight in public agencies, the chances are that stocks of salt and the like have been diminished due to lack of money to top up - and we already had a cold November to contend with. It is also somewhat amusing how everyone around the country is now sagely discussing the options we should have taken about importing salt supplies, the three ports through which we import salt, the numbers of days supply we have available, what will happen when it runs out etc - experts one and all!

If you believe the current weather predictions, it looks like we'll have similar temperatures of down to minus 12, and probably lots more snow, then it would be wise to stock the store cupboard with enough to get by in case shop supplies run short... so here would be my list (and sorry, we cant supply you with these at our farmers market, as we've had to cancel the one scheduled for this weekend!)

Stock up on fresh veggies and meat - you can always freeze meat til needed, and winter root vegetables keep well for up to a week to 10 days.

Brown rice and wholegrain pasta - lower GI so will keep hunger pangs at bay for longer

Why not buy some wholegrain flour and make some bread - if you are going to be stuck indoors for the weekend, at least be able to enjoy the taste of your own bread - lots of recipes on the web!

Check if you have enough olive oil, garlic, ginger, chillies, onions etc - they will liven up any meal, however simple...

Make sure you have a good supply of eggs in, as they are a great source of protein at all times

A few treats would go down well, so some nice cheese and a couple of chutneys, maybe some charcuterie and some roasted vegetables - also great if your neighbours decide to call, you can rustle up a quick supper in no time!

dont forget some wine - red wine would be my favourite during this type of weather - and it contains more antioxidants and polyphenols to ward off the winter colds and flu!

Of course, dont forget the practical side of things, such as loo-paper etc - wouldnt do to run out of lifes little other essentials!
